The Nigeria Super Eagles have expressed team’s readiness to win the Championship of African Nations, Chan Tournament for the first time in Kigali, Rwanda.
The Coach, Sunday Oliseh made the statement after the home based Eagles thrashed the Menas of Niger 4-1 in their opening Group C campaign.
“The boys have proven that they are ready to win the Chan trophy for the first time for Nigeria…This is owing to the manner they adhere to instructions. Their adherence to instruction has really improved and if they continue to play each game according to tactics handed down to them, they will definitely win the trophy,” Oliseh said.
Nigeria rose to the occasion after a dull first half display, bursting to life 30 seconds into the restart through Osas Okoro strike. The Enugu Rangers man opened scoring, camly slotting the ball past the goalkeeper following Tunde Adeniji’ assistance.
Other goals for Nigeria came off the boots of Abia Warriors striker, Chisom Chikatara who came in as a substitute for Adeniji. Chikatara’s first goal came in the 74th minutes of play when he received a floated pass from Okoro, controlled the ball before shooting it to the top corner of the net.
The Menas pulled one goal back through Zakary Adebayor, but Chikatara registered his brace to restore two goals lead for Nigeria.
The Eagles continued to press on, with Chikatara missing goal scoring opportunities. However, he found the back of the net to complete his hat trick late in the 90th minutes off an assist from Prince Aggreh.
Commenting on Chikatara’s sterling performance, Oliseh maintained that his advise to the lad was instrumental to the good performance.
“After a sloppy first half, I told Chikatara, go and score a hat trick because it was important for us to start off this campaign with a win,” he stated.
Meanwhile, Super Eagles coordinator, Patrick Pascal has disclosed that attention has immediately shifted to their next game against Tunisia.
“Everyone in the team is focusing on Tunisia now. We have put the Niger win behind us and our aim is to also beat Tunisia. We watched their game against Guinea and I think we can handle them, “ he added.
Nigeria is now top Group C on 3 points and will next play Tunisia who drew 2-2 against Guinea on Friday.
