The Oluwo of Iwo, Oba AbdulRasheed Adewale Akanbi has commended the gallantry displayed by the men of the Nigeria Police during the armed robbery attacks on banks in Ikirun on Friday.
The Oluwo also congratulated the Osun State Government for making security a top priority, the move he said made the law enforcement agencies to perform efficiently.
“There is no doubt that Osun is impregnable for criminals and this is commendable. This can easily be attributed to the foresight of Governor Aregbesola in considering security most paramount.
“I am aware of about 25 highly sophisticated Armoured Personnel Carriers provided the police which are so common on our roads in Osun. I am also aware of the many patrol vans.
While congratulating both the Police and the state government, the Oluwo urged them not to relent saying modern criminals employ new tactics to overwhelm their victims.
“What happened in our state on Friday was test case again on the preparedness of our security agencies to combat crime. We must congratulate the government for this and we salute the gallantry of the officers” the Oluwo Said.
On Friday, the Nigeria Police killed five armed robbery suspects, injured one and arrested four in a gun-duel that lasted for about an hour in Ikirun town, Osun State, South West Nigeria.
In the gun battle that made the residents of the very peaceful town to scamper for safety, the daring armed robbers had stormed commercial banks where no fewer than four policemen and six civilians were feared killed in robbery operations.
The armed robbers, who invaded the town in about four vehicles, used explosives to break security doors of three commercial banks located in the heart of the community and shot sporadically into the air to create panic among the people.
The anti-riot policemen, who responded to distress calls, engaged the hoodlums in a shootout that lasted more than 45 minutes and in the process, killed five, injured one and arrested four robbers.
To make it difficult for the robbers to escape, the policemen barricaded all the entry points to Ikirun town.
Realising that they have been encircled, the robbers in their desperate move to escape shot indiscriminately, killing and injuring a number of people.
According to eye witness accounts, the robbers had killed about four police officers, four bank staff and two customers during the operation before the arrival of the police who eventually routed them.
The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of Osun Police Command, Mrs Folasade Odoro confirmed the incidents.
She explained that the robbers attacked the bank with dynamite and placed explosives in strategic location in the area where the banks are located with a plan to detonate them one after the other to aid the robbery operation.
Odoro said the police anti-bomb squad were able to identify the explosives and successfully diffuse them.
She however urged residents to stay away from the scene of the robbery so as not to jeopardise police operation and investigation.
The PPRO added that the police recovered two Beretta pistols from the armed robbers with about 7.5 million Naira carted away from the banks.
