The 7th South-East and South-South Federation of Youths Soccer Clubs (FEYSOC) grassroots football competition for U-18, U-15 and U-13 began in Enugu on Tuesday.
The football tournament which was instituted in 2010, kicked off in Enugu beginning with the group stage.
The opening match had Stars of the Sea from Anambra and Able Grace from Udi, Enugu State play a goalless draw, while the second saw Emmydon Football Academy, Imo, beat Oriental Football Academy from Onitsha, Anambra 2-1.
The Secretary, Organising Committee for the tournament, Anistar Izuikem, said that the tournament was organised to discover talented players for Nigerian clubs and the national teams.
“This is the 7th edition of this competition and the teams have been doing well.
Although last year, we had a larger number of teams to compare to the current year but all the same, we have strong clubs competing.
New Generation FC of Umuahia, Abia, has won the U-18 category twice in 2015 and 2016, while Emmydon Football Academy won the U-13 in 2016.
Unique FC of Delta won the 2016 U-15 category but they did not register for the ongoing competition,’’ he said.
The secretary said that 38 teams were competing in the ongoing tournament.
“In the U-18 category, we have 15 teams, in U-15, we have 13 teams and in the U-13, we have 10 teams,’’ Izuikem said.
He said that since the arrival date of the participating teams on Aug. 6, the committee had conducted screening on Aug. 7 which was the arrival deadline for the teams.
He noted that the competition would end on Aug. 12 and urged the teams to observe the rules and regulations to avoid disqualification.
Izuikem said that his club, Star Plus FC was not qualified to compete because he is a member of the organising committee.
