No fewer than 4,000 athletes are expected to participate in Nigerian Polytechnic Games scheduled to hold from April 29 to May 6 at the Federal Polytechnic, Nasarawa.
The Rector of the polytechnic, Prof. Abdulkadir Shittima, said this in Lafia when he led a delegation from the school to pay the Emir of Lafia, Isah Agwai, who is the chairman of the Traditional Council of Chiefs in Nasarawa State, a courtesy visit in his palace on Wednesday.
Shittima promised that the athletes from his institution would not disappoint in the competition.
He said their mission at the palace was to seek royal support ahead of the Games, adding that they were expecting some revelations during the competition.
According to him, Federal Polytechnic will be hosting the Games for the first time since its inception 30 years ago.
The rector said as part of the preparations for the Games, zonal competitions had been going on in seven different centres across the country with over 80 polytechnics participating. He said the champions of the zonal competitions would qualify for the Games.
Shittima said basketball, football and athletics were among the sports the athletes would compete in.
The emir assured the management of the institution of his support towards the success of the Games.
Meanwhile, the Nasarawa State Government has promised to support the Games.
According to the, Deputy Governor Silas Ali-Agara gave the assurance while hosting the management of the polytechnic in Lafia.
Ali-Agara commended the institution for securing the hosting rights and urged school to win the competition.
“Hosting the (NIPOGA) will, in the long run, add value to what we are doing in the state,’’ he said
