Nigeria’s Acting President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo, says the late Dr. Yusuf Maitama Sule, was a patriotic Nigerian who never wavered in his belief in the unity and stability of Nigeria.
Prof. Osinbajo stated this in his tribute to the late elder statesman before the commencement of Wednesday’s Federal Executive Council meeting.
He said the late Dr. Maitama Sule would be remembered for his eloquence on issues that concerned Nigeria and Africa.
He said “I recall in particular his speech which he gave when I was in Form 5 in secondary school. It was titled Africa has arrived. It was such an incredible speech that I kept memory of it.
“I reminded him of it many many years after. He will be sadly missed by all of us who regarded him as a mentor and as a father of our nation and one of the contributors to our democracy and also our stability as a nation.”
He prayed for the comfort of the family of the late Maitama Sule and all those who would miss him.
The Acting President said the federal government was represented at the burial of Dr. Maitama Sule on Tuesday in the North Western Nigerian city of Kano by a delegation led by the Chief of Staff to President Muhammadu Buhari, Alhaji Abba Kyari.
A minute of silence was observed for Dr. Sule by members of the Federal Executive Council.
The late Maitama Sule, who was Nigeria’s Representative to the United Nations, died on Monday at the age of 87.
