The Future Assured Initiative of Aisha Buhari, the wife of Nigerian President, has distributed food and non-food items to Internally Displaced PeopleIDPs, who have returned to their homes, which were destroyed by insurgents in Borno State.
Under the Get-Involved Initiative, the programme started in Benisheik, Kaga Local Government and is now being extended to five additional local government areas of Askira Uba, Gwoza, Magumeri, Dikwa and Mafa.
At the flag-off in Maiduguri, the Secretary of the committee set up by the Future Assured Initiative in Borno State, Zuweira Gambo, said members of the initiative were going to visit every local government area, to distribute the items by themselves.
Gambo said the distribution would be made in conjunction with the emirate councils, representatives at the Federal and state assemblies, as well as the chairmen of the local government areas.
The Future Assured initiative, is a creation of the wife of the President of Nigeria, Mrs. Aisha Buhari, set up to rapidly improve the poor health condition of women, children and other vulnerable groups in the country.
The initiative is currently working with the Internally Displaced Persons in Nigeria, through a committee that she set up, mainly to deal with the distribution of relief materials.
The first phase of distribution in Borno State was in Kaga Local Government Area in November, and is being now extended to five additional local government areas in the second phase.
The relief materials, according to the Secretary of the committee in Borno State, Zuweira Gambo, were from individuals, agencies, associates, organisations and friends of the president’s wife, who donated in cash and kind to assist the victims of the boko haram Insurgency.
The items include 90 bags of rice for a local government, 600 bags of Masavita, 600 bags of Masabiski, 170 cartons of noodles, 30 cartons of toothpaste and other different items.
Hajia Gambo said the objective of the programme was to empower at least 300 people in each of the local government areas.
“The idea is to empower at least 300 people in each local government area. And when we say people, if you give one person one bag of rice, one bag of biski, one bag of maize floor, at least the entire family will benefit. So if you multiply this 300 by the number of families, you will see that these items will go a long way in alleviating the present condition of the IDPs, who are just returning to their homes,” said Gambo.
The Chairman of Dikwa Local Government Area, Mohammed Ali Gana, thanked the wife of the President, Mrs. Buhari and the wife of the Borno State Governor, Hajia Nana Kashim Shettima and pledged that the food items would surely reach the IDPs in his local Government area.
“We are going to make use of these food items judiciously according to the specification. We have our local Bulamas, we are going to invite them for a stakeholders meeting; we are going to divide the number of items, so that they will go and bring the concerned people. We screen them, give them their ticket for them to go and come and collect,” Alhaji Gana said.
For Shettima Lawan Maina, the Chairman of Mafa Local Government Area, the items meant for the IDPs would not be diverted to any other place.
“I was so delighted to receive these food and non-food items to my IDPs. In Sha Allah, I will take the food items to my community in MafaTown and in Sha Allah, I will distribute it according to the specification made here. In Sha Allah, everybody, the vulnerable ones will benefit. No single bag will be diverted and it will not be politicized.”
The committee set up to ensure the proper distribution of the donated items from the wife of Nigeria’s president, pledged that the distribution would be carried out in a transparent manner, using collection slips which had already been signed by the committee.
