Aisha Buhari seeks more unity among Nigerian women

The Wife of Nigeria’s President, Mrs Aisha Buhari has urged the new leadership of the National Council for Women Societies NCWS to review the constitution of the group, to some major concerns of women in Nigeria.

She gave the suggestion at the Presidential Villa, in her capacity as the Grand Patron of NCWS, when the new Executives of the Council paid her a courtesy visit.

According to her “Since 2005 ,the constitution has remained same without taking cognizance of new and emerging challenges on issues of women at national and international levels . Something needs to be done,” she said.

New Course

The Wife of the President who asked the leadership to chart a course for greater future for the Council, emphasised the importance of bringing everybody on board towards building a strong partnership as stipulated by their motto which says “Service in Unity”

Mrs Buhari commended the successful election of the new leadership, which she said was conducted in most democratic fashion by the women that recently converged on Abuja from all parts of the country.

The Wife of the President promised to offer her support, assistance and guidance to the Council.


Earlier, the Newly Elected President of the Council Mrs Gloria Shoda regretted that despite the numerical strength of Women n the country, matters concerning them were relegated to the background.

She however promised to initiate programmes that will spur the members to action in order to overcome challenges that had hindered growth and development of NCWS, as an umbrella body responsible for harmonizing the activities of women in the country.

The President of the council also commended the motherly role of Mrs Buhari in ensuring a smooth transition in the Council and her various efforts in assisting the internally displaced persons most of whom are women and children.
