The Nigerian government says the first phase of Ajaokuta Steel Company will provide 500,000 upstream and downstream jobs when it becomes operational.
The first phase of the plant would also provide direct employment for 10,000 technical staff when inaugurated.
The sole administrator of the company, Mr. Isah Onobere said this during a media tour of the company in Ajaokuta, Kogi State.

Mr Onobere also said the first phase had been completed and was envisaged to produce 1.3 million tonnes of liquid steel per annum.
An additional 400 million dollars is needed to complete Ajaokuta steel which had reached 98 per cent completion; two billion Dollars is needed for infrastructure rehabilitation and operational cost.
“Government is considering the report on various options on the way forward for the completion of the project. These options are outright sale, concessioning and joint venture of Ajaokuta steel,’’ Mr. Onobere stated.
Leading supplier of steel products
Ajaokuta steel company was established with the intention of becoming the leading supplier of quality steel products for Nigeria’s economy such as construction, packaging, wire drawing and nail making industry among others.
