Algeria appoints Georges Leekens as new Coach

Algeria has appointed Belgian Georges Leekens as the new coach of their football national team.

The appointment of Leekens was confirmed on Thursday night by the federal office of the Algerian Football Federation.

Leekens’ first match in charge will be the World Cup qualifier against Nigeria in Uyo on 12 November.

’’The ad hoc committee, after consulting several technicians, adopted a short-list of five coaches. The choice was made of Mr. Georges Leekens to lead the national team. This choice was approved unanimously by members of the federal office“, FAF wrote in a statement.

He succeeds Milovan Rajevac who resigned after the 1-1 draw against Cameroon on 9 October in a World Cup 2018 qualifier.

During his career, Leekens has coached Anderlecht, Trabzonspor, Lokeren, Belgium, Tunisia and Algeria, whom he worked briefly for in 2004 before leaving for family reasons.
