Algeria’s ruling party chief resigns

Secretary General of the Front of Liberation Front (FLN), the ruling party in Algeria, Amar Saidan resigned, local media reported.

Saidani announced his resignation to the members of the central committee, the highest body of the party, saying he was forced to step down following the health difficulties he has been suffering. He was elected as the secretary general of FLN in September 2013.

Saidani inherited the post from Abdelaziz Belkhadem who had been sacked from the central committee despite leading the party to hit an overwhelming win in the local and legislative elections of 2012.

Saidani has proposed Djamel Ould Abbes to rule the party for a transitional era.

The FLN is preparing the forthcoming legislative elections due in November 2017.
