Nigeria’s Victor Anichebe produced a sparkling display on Saturday to help Sunderland record their first win in the English Premier League on Saturday.
The Nigerian striker scored one and won a penalty which resulted in another goal as the Black Cats beat AFC Bournemouth 2-1 at the Vitality Stadium.
Anichebe’s goal in the 33rd minute temporarily levelled matters after the hosts had taken the lead in the 11th minute through Dan Gosling.
The forward, who was making his first Premier League start since February, had not scored in 15 league matches.
Anichebe was involved in Sunderland’s winner as he was fouled by Adam Smith when clean through on goal.
The penalty was dispatched by Jermain Defoe and the Black Cats dug in to close out the win but they remain bottom of the league standings with five points from 11 matches.
