APC to disqualify governorship aspirants who boycott screening

Nigeria’s governing party, the All Progressives Congress, APC says it will disqualify any aspirant that does not stand for screening ahead of the Edo State governorship primary election.

The APC National Organising Secretary, Senator Osita Izunaso said this when he inaugurated the Edo governorship Screening and Appeal committees at the APC National Secretariat in Abuja.

He told the committee to be diligent, fair and just in the task given to them.

“It shall be your responsibility to verify all certificates, documents, claims and other supporting materials submitted by the aspirants in support of their qualifications for meeting the constitutional requirements, the electoral act, the party constitution and other guidelines issued by the party in conformity with all eligibility provisions.

“If you bring an aspirant that is not qualified and he or she runs the election on our ticket and wins, and the other people goes to court, our party will lose to the party that came second, so your duty is very critical” Senator Izunaso said.

The Chairman of the Screening committee who is a former Deputy Speaker of Nigeria’s House of Representatives, Mr. Chibudom Nwuche assured the party of the committee’s commitment to carry out a fair screening.

He further added that the first litmus test for the success of any political party is premised on the fact that party fateful and indeed anybody contesting or aspiring for any political office on the platform of the party must have a sense of being treated fairly and justly too.

“What makes a party strong is the justice it dispenses in the selection of candidates and the screening exercise is the first in that process.

“What killed many parties in the past … is injustice. In APC, I know that that will not be here”.

Twelve aspirants will be participating in the screening exercise, eleven men and one woman.

The screening of Aspirants holds in Abuja between Wednesday 8th and Sunday 12th June, 2016 and the primary election is to hold in Edo state on June 18.
