APR wins 16th Rwanda League crown

APR have won the Rwanda Premier League for the 16th time after rivals Rayon Sports suffered a shocking 1-0 loss away to relegation-bound AS Muhanga on Thursday 7 July  in Muhanga, in the Southern Province.

With 57 points and three matches remaining, Rayon cannot topple rivals APR, champions for the past two seasons, who have 67 points plus a game in hand. The ‘army side’ are expected to be decorated with the league trophy on the final day of the season against AS Kigali on Sunday, 17 July 2016 in Kigali.

By the feat, APR represents Rwanda in next year’s CAF Champions League while arch-rivals Rayon battle for honours in the CAF Confederation Cup.

In another match played on Thursday, Marines edged visiting Mukura VS 2-0 at Umuganda Stadium thanks to a goal each from Blaise Itangishaka and Haruna Muvunyi. Marines moved to 10th spot with 30 points while Mukura VS remain third with 57 points.

Meanwhile, Rayon will host SC Kiyovu on Sunday, 10 July  at the Regional Stadium in Kigali before before heading to Rusizi three days later for a tricky duel against Espoir.
