The General Officer Commanding, the 82 Division of the Nigerian Army, Major General Adamu Abubakar has flagged off the 2017 inter-brigade warrant officers and senior non-commission competition.
Major General Abubakar, who was represented by the 82 Division Garrison Commander, Brigadier General Lasisi Adeboye described the competition as “an army level exercise conducted annually at formation level”.
Abubakar said “the purpose of the exercise is to assess the fitness level of top echelon of the soldiers’ cadres”.
According to the GOC, the exercise would afford the division the opportunity to key into the vision of the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Tukur Buratai.
He said “this competition affords the Division the ability to key into the Chief of Army Staff vision, which is to have a professionally responsive Nigerian Army in the discharge of its constitutional roles”.
Major General Abubakar stated that the competitors made up of soldiers from brigades within the division would be participating in different activities.
“Four formations under 82 Divisions would be competing in activities such as live firing, swimming, map reading, drill and obstacles crossing, weapons handling and others”, he said.
The GOC further stated: “These exercises is to enable the Division to keep its troops physically and mentally alert. These are the basic skills required of a soldier to enable him survive the rigours of military profession”.
While urging participants to put in their best, he emphasized the need for instructors to observe and address lapses in the training programme.
The brigades participating in the competition include 13 Brigade, Calabar; 14 Brigade, Ohafia, Abia State; 34 Artillery Brigade, Owerri, Imo State and 82 Division Garrison, Enugu State.
