Army tests officers on weapon handling proficiency

The 81 Division of the Nigerian Army has commenced testing of its officers’ proficiency on weapon handling, map reading among others.

The three-day competition mainly for junior cadre officers in 9 Brigade, Lagos, will engage them in weapon handling, communication skill, live firing, obstacles crossing, physical fitness, and combat swimming.

The General Officer Commanding (GOC) 81 Division, Major General Isidore Edet said the competition aimed at improving the officers’ leadership traits.

General Edet also reiterated that the competition would also prepare the personal well in view of the present security challenges in the country.

‘‘The security challenges have brought to the fore the existing gaps in our training and operations necessitating a reorientation at all levels.

‘‘As junior leaders, your effectiveness and discipline in the discharge of your duties is highly essential to efficiently drive the command structure of the Nigerian Army,’’ the GOC emphasised.

General Edet further said ‘‘It is important for you all to be adequately trained in order to ensure optimal performance.’’

Participating Units

The units partaking in the competition include 9 Brigade, 35 Artillery Brigade, 45 Division Engineers and 81 Division Garrison among others.

Commander, 81 Division Garrison, Colonel Sunday Igbinomwanhia said about 100 officers would take part in the competition.

Igbinomwanhia added that the exercise would enhance the proficiency of officers in combat related activities.
