The recent coronation of the Benin monarch in Edo State, Ewuare II has afforded Nigeria to show the whole world that unity exists among citizens and the various traditional institutions.
Edo State Governor, Adams Oshiomhole said this while speaking with the State House Correspondents in Abuja on the coronation of Oba of Benin last Thursday.
Governor Oshiomhole singled out the presence of the Sultan of Sokoto to buttress his point, which showed that the nation was committed to one indivisible Nigeria.
“The presence of other traditional rulers, especially the Sultan of Sokoto at the coronation of the Oba of Benin was very significant, because the Sultan is not just a traditional ruler but also the head of the Islamic Faith in Nigeria. So if you have the caliphate across the Niger, extending that level of solidarity for brotherhood, bringing it down to Benin, to celebrate the occasion of the installation of the Oba then that royal bond does not only speak to history that had existed before the amalgamation of Northern and Southern Nigeria, it shows that even today, those responsible for our culture and traditions are sustaining those bond and it shows that Nigeria is one and we are committed to one indivisible Nigeria,” he explained.
Most Important Assignment
The Governor commended the Oba for painstakingly going through the rituals for the coronation process.
He said:“I think what is unique about the coronation is the fact that the Oba even in the 21st century, tried hard to stick to the tradition by observing every bit of the entire process for his coronation, including the most tedious aspect of it.”
According to him, the presentation of the Staff of office to the Oba was the best function he has performed as the Governor of Edo State.
“On my part, I felt very privileged, I think in all my eight years of stewardship in Edo state, if you ask me, that assignment of having to hand over the staff of office to the Oba of Benin was the most singular important assignment that God has granted me the privilege to preside,” Governor Oshiomhole added.
