The new President of the Economic Community of West African States-Ecowas, Mr. Marcel Alain De Souza has pledged his commitment to work towards regional integration.
Mr. Souza, who takes over from Mr. Kadre Desire Quedraogo made the pledge at the handover ceremony at ECOWAS Secretariat in Abuja.
He pledged to continue with the zeal of his predecessor in the drive towards regional integration and common external tariff.
“We shall deepen our monetary integration, our trade and economic union; we need to look towards free movement.” he pledged.
He further stated that,“We will have an ECOWAS taxi that will travel from Lagos to Abidjan and even get up to Cape Verde so that ECOWAS citizens are able to understand that they truly belong to a single economy.”
Tackling regional challenges
Mr. Souza also expressed his commitment to continue in the fight against terrorism and also ensure that citizens in the region have access to quality health care to check the menace of deadly disease like Ebola.
“We do have challenges against terror; I will see that ECOWAS citizens and ECOWAS governments work together in the fight against terrorism so that we can deepen security.
There is the challenge in the area of health; we will make that disease like Ebola does not rear its ugly head again,” he assured.
Mr. Marcel Alain De Souza from Benin Republic was born on October 20, 1953.
He was the Presidential Candidate of the Benin Republic Front, FRB, in the March 2016 presidential elections in Benin Republic.
Mr. Souza takes over from Mr. Kadre Desire Quedraogo, who headed the commission for four years.
