A meeting to review the work plans for the conduct of free, fair and credible elections in Ecowas member states is holding in Abuja.
It is a meeting of the steering committee of the Ecowas Network.
The President of the Ecowas Network and chairman Nigeria’s electoral body, Professor Mahmood Yakubu said “the meeting would offer an opportunity for the committee to review its status in carrying out the set objectives.’’
Professor Yakubu said that the committee would also discuss the plan for the solidarity mission to Liberia in support of the country’s electoral commission for the presidential election billed for October 10, with the view of ensuring credible and peaceful election.
“We will at the same time plan for the need assessment mission to Sierra Leone to determine what areas the Network could assist towards the country’s presidential election scheduled for March 2018,’’ Professor Yakubu said.
The present of the commission pointed out that the mission to Liberia and Sierra Leone would be leaving at the end of this weekend.
Professor Yakubu stressed that the conduct of regular and periodic elections were the steps towards the development of democracy.
“The contest for power and outcome of elections, especially the perception of citizens as to whether elections are free, fair and credible can either enhance or disrupt the democratic process,’’ he said
The president of the commission however stated that the last General Assembly in Cotonou also agreed to establish a permanent secretariat in Abuja to allow for closer liason with the ECOWAS secretariat, located in Nigeria.
