Ethiopia to host 29th A.U Heads of States Summit

The Ethiopian government says it is ready to host the 29th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of the Heads of State and Government of the African Union (AU).

Leaders from across the continent are expected to fly into the country for the two-day summit as Addis Ababa hosts the highest decision making organ of the AU.

A joint press conference by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Addis Ababa city authorities disclosed that all the necessary facilities needed for the summit and also security preparations have been completed.

The Summit has the theme “Harnessing the Demographic Dividend through Investments in Youth”.

It is expected to take place between 3rd – 4th July 2017 at the A.U headquarters in Addis Ababa.

It will be the first Summit to be chaired by new AU president, Alpha Conde. The Guinean leader was elected earlier this year to replace Idriss Deby Itno of Chad.

At the 28th AU Summit held in January this year, Chadian Moussa Faki Mahamat was elected the new Chairperson for the African Union Commission (AUC). The other major highlight was the readmission of Morocco to the continental bloc after over three decades out.
