Nigeria’s Federal Capital Territory Administration has appealed to its residents to remain calm against the backdrop of the reported case of the outbreak of the Avian bird flu Influenza in the Federal Capital Territory.
In a release signed by the Acting Director, Admin& Finance of the Secretariat, Dr. Musa Aliyu, assured the residents that, the FCT Administration was prepared to combat the disease.
Reacting on the report of the outbreak of the disease in Kuje and Gwagalada Area Councils, Dr. Aliyu said that, the affected farms have been quarantined for depopulation and disinfection.
He said the measure was to ensure that the disease does not spread beyond the affected farms; saying that, the Secretariat has already embarked on an aggressive sensitization campaign to create the much needed awareness on the signs and symptoms to look out for in their birds and the steps that can be taken in the case of an outbreak.
Dr. Aliyu further explained that the secretariat has already set up a hotline for residents to inform the authority on any suspected case.
He highlighted some of the symptoms to watch out for as follows:
- Loss of appetite
- Uncoordinated movement
- Drop in egg production,
- Bleeding from the nose and mouth
- Sudden death
- Severe depression
He identified the following tips on how to prevent the outbreak and spread of the disease: Use of gloves to handle birds, restriction of movement of people, birds, equipment between farms as well as disinfecting all equipment after use.
