About 300 Armwrestlers are presently participating in a two-day trial organised by the Nigeria Armwrestling Federation (NAF) to select athletes for the 8th African Armwrestling Championship.
Nigeria secured the hosting right of the championship holding from June 28 to July 1 at the last African Congress held in 2016.
The President of the body, Olatunji Jackson, said that 50 athletes would be selected for the championship.
Jackson said that prior to the ongoing trial; the athletes had been in camp for weeks in preparation for the competition.
“The trial is just to select the best that would represent Nigeria; and being the host, we want to ensure that our athletes out shine participants from other countries,’’ he said.
Jackson said that the 10 countries participating in the event are Ghana, South Africa, Morroco, Seychelles, Libya and Mali.
Others are: Mauritius, Cameroun, Egypt and the host Nigeria.
Jackson also revealed that the body had put all necessary measures in place to ensure a hitch-free event.
“Competition of this magnitude requires good organisation and coordination for everything to go smoothly and we have done that.
“I want to thank the Lagos State Sports Council for its contribution to the event,’’ he said.
