Vin Oliji, Abuja

The Federal Fire Service has reiterated its commitment to ensure full enforcement of the implementation of the national fire safety code in private and public buildings in the country.

The public Relations Officer of the federal fire service, Mr. Collins Elechi stated this in an interview with voice of Nigeria in Abuja.

Mr. Elechi said that the service has observed that people have neglected the implementation of fire safety code in their buildings thereby exposing them to the danger of fire outbreak that could be avoided if proper measure was taken.

He noted that nobody was supposed to put up a building without proper supervision and installation of fire safety device in their buildings.

“The fire safety code is a measure put in place to minimize the destruction that could be caused by fire and we expect that every body should comply with this because non compliance to the code could do more harm than good,” he said.

The public relations officer lamented that compliance to the fire safety code in the country was at its lowest level which he described as unacceptable stating that the fire service has a healthy synergy with an insurance industry to provide necessary insurance cover to the fire service officers and the public.

“We have embarked on joint sensitization with the insurance industry to educate the public on the need to be safety conscience against fire,” he said.

Mr. Elechi remarked that uncontrolled fire and related emergencies pose significant threat to socio economic growth of the country stating that checking the menace of uncontrolled fire was the responsibility of everybody.
