France to check asylum claims in Libya

France is planning to process asylum claims in Libya rather than wait for people to try and make the risky journey across the Mediterranean.

Libya is a major stopping point on the route for many migrants from Africa.

The UN’s migration body, the IOM, says that more than 2,300 migrants have died this year, while trying to cross from North Africa to Europe.

According to French President Emmanuel Macron “The idea is to create hotspots to avoid people taking crazy risks when they are not all eligible for asylum.”
