Osun State Government has sealed off the main office of telecoms giant, Globacom, in Osogbo, and its four base stations in the state, over unpaid tax amounting to N532million.
The Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the State Internal Revenue Service (OSIRS), Mr. Dayo Oyebanji and his team carried out the seal operation in the state capital, Osogbo.
Oyebanji says the action was to ensure remittance of all outstanding tax due to the state, adding the revenue agency had already secured a warrant of distress from the Osun State High Court against Globacom to carry out the closure.
While effecting the court order, Oyebanji accompanied by security agencies, ordered workers of the firm out, as the agency officials padlocked the office located at the Fakunle Area of Osogbo, Osun State.
Oyebanji explained that the agency had tried all possible efforts to resolve the matter amicably within the last two years but claimed Globacom had refused to yield to all overtures.
He said the closure followed the intervention of the State House of Assembly after which Globacom representatives failed to fulfil the promise to remit the outstanding tax liabilities within two weeks.
The revenue boss regretted that while other individuals and corporate bodies were voluntarily complying with the payment of tax, the management of Globacom had refused to show any sign of compliance.
“Before this time, the state government had been lenient with the Globacom because of the importance of their business to both the people and the government. We engaged them in series of meetings with the assistance of House Committee on Communication but we are yet to get reasonable response from the company.”
He said the telecommunication company had also failed to obtain relevant approval for the laying of fibre optics in line with the State’s regulation on physical and urban planning.
Oyebanji threatened that the company may not be re-opened until the company remittd all outstanding tax.
“It is only the Globacom Limited that we are sealing because others, especially those invited by the Assembly have responded to our calls. It is only the Globacom that has not shown up. They are giving one excuse or the other.”
The revenue boss appealed to the residents to fulfil their civic duties to enable government perform its obligations to the people.
