The Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Mr. Babatunde Fashola has told Electricity Distribution Companies (DISCOs) that government will only pay debts it has verified.
The minister at the 10th Monthly Meeting with Power Sector Operators in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State operators, was responding to advertorials placed by DISCOs, in which they alleged that government had failed to pay outstanding debts.
Mr. Fashola described the advertorial as misleading and failing to acknowledge the existence of an on on-going verification processes and their non-compliance with jointly agreed resolutions to submit details.
He said Government would not succumb to blackmail and would only pay verified debts.
The Minister added that the Nigerian Government would not pay its debts, estimated to be about N100bn under the aegis of an association saying that “debts are not calculated by estimates…it is either N100Billion or less than N100Billion but not an estimate.”
