Governor Abubakar Bello of Niger has directed the Ministry of Health to distribute hospital consumables to health centres across the state. Bello gave the directive during an inspection visit to Mrs. Jumai Aliyu Maternal and Child Health Centre, Badeggi.
He expressed shock over the state of facilities at the health centre, and regretted that facilities procured for distribution were wasting away.“Government has supplied facilities, but government officials keep applying bureaucracy in distributing them just to satisfy some selfish interests. Government will not accept a situation where drugs are stored in stores in the state capital, leaving local government areas without drugs, hospital equipment and other consumables. How can you have drugs in the store wasting away? Open the stores and share them out to healthcare centres because they need these drugs. Bring out the mattresses and beds, let the people use them. Why do you keep them?”, he said.
What do you want to do with them? I want them released. Stop playing politics with everything,’’ he warned.
The governor directed the commissioner to take over the distribution of the health facilities and ensure that they were promptly and fairly shared.
Earlier, it was reported that the Commissioner of Health, Dr. Mustapha Jibril, had explained that the drugs, beds and mattresses were under the care of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) office, and explained that distribution modalities were being worked out
