House of Representatives to pass 2016 budget in March

Lawan Hamidu, Abuja

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt Hon Yakubu Dogara has assured Nigerians that the House would pass the 2016 budget by the end of March.

The Speaker gave the assurance when he received the Nigerian Association of Chambers of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture in his office.

He said though the budget has some issues, the Legislators would ensure that the budget would impact on the lives of its citizens.

The Speaker said the lawmakers were aware of the responsibilities
placed on them in ensuring that the budget is scrutinised and that the lawmakers were liaising with heads of Ministries, Departments and Agencies to produce a good document.

“No sooner than later, hopefully by the end of next month, we will have it ready.” he said.

Economic Challenges

The speaker said the failure to diversify the economy in the past was the cause for the economic challenges bedevilling the country.

He said “If Nigeria had diversified the economy in the past, the nation would have had a prosperous economy. The House had commenced debate on some laws earmarked for review because Nigeria needs to have very competitive laws that would boost businesses like its counterparts.”

Speaking earlier, the President of the association, Chief Bassey
Edem, appealed to the legislators to look into the challenges facing businesses such as infrastructure, especially power and transportation with a view to addressing those businesses to thrive.

Chief Edem commended the House of Representatives on the work so far done on the 2016 budget, reminding them that Nigerians were waiting for the passage of the budget.
