Kano State Government North Western Nigeria has begun free distribution of food items worth N340 million for this year’s Ramadan Feeding Programme.
The sighting of the moon on Sunday night signified the commencement of the fasting period expected to last for thirty days.
The state Commissioner of Information Mohammed Garba said the food items are being distributed to one hundred and seventy two centers across the state under a committee with various center coordinators.
He said “the 172 centers will be responsible for the cooking and distribution of the meals to the less privileged each day during the Ramadan period.”
He said the items being distributed includes 3,600 bags of rice (50kg), 170 bags of Millet, 1,900 gallons (20 litre) cooking oil, 720 bags of beans, 1,008 bags of sugar, 1,080 bags of flour, 360 bags of dates and about 2,000,000 take way food packs were procured.
Earlier, the state governor Abdulahi Ganduje while inspecting the items at the state Printing Press said that 100 percent of all the needed materials for the feeding were secured by the government, while 172 centers have been designated for the less privileged to break their Fast.
“The exercise must be carried out with diligence in view of its spiritual significance. “
“The Center coordinators are the ones to coordinate the preparation of the food for their respective domains. They must ensure that the food prepared is of high quality and that no food item is misappropriated”, the governor asserted.
He said like in previous years, he would personally go round to monitor the preparation and distribution of the Ramadan meals, appealing to well meaning members of the society to complement the efforts of the state government in this regard, particularly in view of the prevailing economic down turn.
He called on expected beneficiaries to make good use of the Ramadan feeding exercise and pray for the success of the present administration.
