The 16 Local Government councils in Kwara state have been dissolved following their inability to meet their statutory responsibility to the people.
Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed justified the councils’ dissolution in his formal notification to the State House of Assembly.
In the message read by the Deputy Speaker, Mathew Okedare who presided over Tuesday plenary, Governor Ahmed said that all the 16 councils failed in their responsibility in the last year.
Governor Ahmed noted that the councils failed to execute any meaningful projects in the last three years and were unable to pay salaries for months.
“I took this step following complaints by the residents of poor performance of the Local councils in discharging their statutory functions,” he said.
Governor Ahmed informed the House of his intention to appoint Caretaker Committees to run the affairs of the councils.
