Kwara Lawmakers, government to develop indoor sports hall

The Kwara State House of Assembly says it is collaborating with the State Executive Council to put the Indoor Sports Hall of the State Stadium in proper shape.

The Speaker of the House, Dr. Ali Ahmad said this in Ilorin while receiving the executive members of the State chapter of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria, led by its Chairman, Alhaji Abdulwaheed Bibire at the Assembly Complex.

According to him, a huge sum of money has been budgeted in 2016 appropriation law for the renovation of the Indoor Sports Hall to enable it host national and international competitions.

Dr. Ahmad who spoke through the Deputy Speaker, Mr. Matthew Okedare recalled that the State played host to over twenty sporting events in the past, noting that the House would monitor renovation once it begins to enable the Indoor Sports Hall meet international standard.

The Speaker called for the re-introduction of Principal Cups and Inter-House sports competitions across the 16 local government areas to discover hidden talent at the grassroots.

Dr. Ahmad who commended the SWAN for its activities in promoting sports in the state urged corporate organisations and individuals to partner the state government in developing the sports sector.

Earlier in his address, the State Chairman, Sport Writers Association, Alhaji Abdulwaheed Bibire had thanked the House of Assembly for its support to the activities of the body in the past and solicited for more collaboration in promoting sports in the state.

Alhaji Bibire who described sports as a money spinning venture tasked the Assembly to facilitate the renovation of the indoor Sports Hall to enable the state earn more revenues from the sports sector.

He appealed to the Speaker to sponsor Scrabble Competition among Journalists in the state with a view to enhancing unity among them as well as improving their talents.
