The Kwara State Government has appealed to the people of the state to keep a clean environment and avoid defecating in the gutters, to avoid further spread of cholera disease.
Already, the government has confirmed the outbreak of the disease in the state and has put up all necessary machineries in place to take care of the confirmed cases and also curtail further outbreak.
In an exclusive interview with Voice of Nigeria on Thursday, the state Epidemiologist, Dr Khadijat Kamaldeen said that the disease was confirmed, following the outcome of the results of the samples taken to the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital.
Dr Khadijat stated that the initial challenges the State Ministry of Health faced in diagnosing the samples was due to the strike embarked upon by the staff of the hospital.
”The workers have now resumed work and more laboratory test would be conducted,” She said.
Dr Kamaldeen said her office had already contacted the Ministry of Health of the confirmed cases of Cholera and that the state government has purchased various drugs necessary at various health centres.
She said that Kwara had recorded some death as a result of the disease.
Dr Kamaldeen directed all local government disease surveillance and notification officers to be at alert and visit all health facilities within their catchment areas and report any suspected case of cholera.
She appealed to operators of private hospitals in the state to report to the Ministry of Health anytime they have any outbreak of disease.
Dr Kamaldeen urged Kwarans to take their personal hygiene very serious and ensure that they observe properly the type of food they eat and wash their hands with soap after visiting the toilets.
