Lagos arraigns four kidnap suspects

The Lagos State government in the south west Nigeria has arraigned the suspected kidnapers of a Monarch, Oniba of Iba, Oba Goriola Oseni before the Igbosere High court in the state.

The four suspected kidnappers who were arraigned on eight-count charge on Murder, Robbery and kidnapping however pleaded not guilty to the charges.

After the official appearance at the court, the state counsel, led by Adeniji Kazeem prayed the court to remand the suspects in the prison custody while their trail begins.

Adeniji Kazeem who is also the Lagos state Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice told journalists that the state would prosecute the case to the logical end.

“This arraignment commences the process of prosecution and we intend to pursue it very diligently and I will be here personally to prosecute this matter provided that we receive all the cooperation from the parties concerned” State Counsel said

He stressed further “We are in court to send a strong signal to the people of Lagos state that the government is up to its tasks and that the criminals; Kidnapers, Cultists, rapists among others that no matter how long it takes, justice will be swift and decisive.”

Meanwhile, the Defence counsel, Beliowei Baidi believes the suspects are still innocent until proven guilty.

According to him “This is the first time they were brought to court, they have just been arraigned, their pleas has been taken as they pleaded not guilty to the charges brought against them and in accordance to the provisions of our constitution. They are presumed innocent until proven guilty by the prosecution.” said Defence counsel

Upon the submission of the counsels, Justice Oluwatoyin Taiwo fixed November 4th, 11th and 18th 2016, when the proper trail of the suspects will commence.

She also granted the prayer of the state counsels to remand the accused in prison custody.

The suspects; Duba Furejo, Ododowo Isiah, Reuben Anthony and Yerin Fresh were arrested by the state police following the incident which led to the kidnap of the monarch and death of the palace guard in July 16th 2016.
