The Lagos City Marathon has been 2nd in Africa and 71st in the world by All-Athletics.Com, the most comprehensive athletics database.
In the over 1000 international marathon worldwide, Access Bank Lagos City Marathon, the first international marathon in Nigeria since 1985 was ranked among the top 100 marathons in the world.
It is ranked 52 in the women event and in the men event 73, a combination of the two scores place Nigeria 71 in the world.
The only marathon ranked above Access Bank Lagos City in Africa is the over a decade old Cape Town Marathon which is ranked number 20 in the world and number one in Africa.
The All-Athletics.com criteria for ranking include the prize money paid by organizer, the number countries that participated, the number of elite field, and the number of athletes.
Access Bank Lagos City Marathon paid winners, men and women $50,000, athletes came from about 20 countries, there were about 70 elite athletes and over 30,000 participants.
The first ten are London Marathon, Berlin Marathon, Dubai Marathon, Amsterdam Marathon, and Seoul Dong-A International Marathon.
Also in the top ten are Paris Marathon, Rotterdam Marathon, Gongju Dong-A Marathon, Praha Marathon and Eindhoven Marathon
The world oldest marathon, Boston Marathon is ranked 46, while the glamorous and prestigious New York Marathon is ranked 18, and Chicago Marathon 28.
Casablanca Marathon Morocco ranked 74 is the third marathon in Africa.
Dakar Marathon in Senegal is ranked 78.
Kigali Peace Marathon ranked 96 is the last Africa marathon that made the top 100 in the world.
Responding to the cheering news, Yussuf Alli General Manager Access Bank Lagos City Marathon said the sponsor and organizers of the Access Bank Lagos City Marathon are working to ensure that the race is ranked among the top 20 before the 5th edition.
“We also intend to organize as many races as possible before the main race that will serve as qualifiers to the Access Bank Lagos City Marathon.’’
