The Executive Director,(Technical) Nigeria Olympic Fund, Mary Onyali-Omagbemi has described sports as a capital expensive venture across the world that needs the support of not only the government but private and corporate bodies.
Onyali stated this in an exclusive interview with Voice of Nigeria in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital, saying that the major role of government in sports is to create enabling environment, build stadia, and provide infrastructural facilities.
She disclosed that the Nigeria Olympic Fund has a target of ten Billion Naira to promote various sporting activities in the country to international standard, and also discover hidden talents particularly from the grassroots.
the athlete disclosed that the Chairman of the Nigeria Olympic Fund Committee, Chief Afe Babalola who is a Senior Advocate of Nigeria donated ten million Naira to the Fund while members of the committee wish to raise more funds through the Celebrity Endorsement Card, lottery and via the Internet.
According to her, the pilot phase of the project of the fund which is weightlifting had been sighted at Offa in Kwara state, North Central Nigeria.
Onyali is the first Nigerian to make five Olympic Games and current record holder of the African two hundred meters.
