The Nigeria Basketball Federation NBBF has named Alex Nwora as the new coach of the male basketball team, D’Tigers on Thursday.
Nwora is excited that Nigeria Basketball Federation, have entrusted him with the job, and he is eager to work very hard to win with the Nigerian team.
The new coach replaces William Voigt, who led Nigeria to their first-ever continental title two years ago in Tunisia, and the former Cape Verde coach admits that the task of defending the title next month will be tougher but he is confident of getting it right with the team.
The 2017 FIBA AfroBasket championship will hold from the 8th of September to the 16th in Senegal and Tunisia.
Nigeria is drawn in Group A, alongside DR Congo, Mali and Cote d’Ivoire.
“I am not new to African basketball having worked with Cape Verde,” Nwora said.
“Nigeria’s talent pool is enormous and I will do my best with my assistants to give a good account. As defending champions, the task is even more difficult because every team will come prepared to dethrone you.”
Meanwhile, Coach of the Kwara State Basketball Team, Kwara Falcons, Adewumi Aderemi has been appointed as the Assistant Coach of the D’Tigers.
His appointment was communicated to the Coach in a statement by the Nigeria Basketball Federation.
Speaking on the development, the Kwara State Director of Sports, Tunde Kazeem described the appointment as a welcome development in view of the performance Coach Aderemi as the handler of Kwara Falcons.
Kazeem who wished the new National Assistant Coach the best urged him to see the appointment as a challenge to do the State and the Nation proud.
The Director noted that Coach Aderemi contributed greatly to the brilliant performance of Kwara Falcons in the Kwese Basketball Premier League.
He commended the State government for the support extended to the Basketball Team.
Nigeria is expected to begin preparations to defence of their African title on Saturday, August 12th.
