Nigeria has congratulated Turkey for holding a successful referendum in securing the future of their country.
According to a statement from the presidency, “President Buhari congratulates Turkish President, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, for the foresight and maturity of leading his people to the polls to decide on the future of leadership for the country that will further deepen peace and stability”.
“The President believes the referendum showcases the democratic credentials of the country and reflects a willingness of the Turkish people to live together and jointly pursue a better future”.
Turkey held a nationwide constitutional referendum on Sunday April 16, where it voted to effect some major changes in the way the country is governed.
Prominent among the constitutional amendments is the introduction of a presidential system of government, with an executive President, abolishing the office of a Prime Minister, currently in existence.
Result of the referendum shows that 51.41 percent of Turks voted ‘Yes’ while 48.59 percent voted ‘No.’
