Nigeria’s Under-19 Cricket team, the Junior Yellow Greens have left for the Africa/International Cricket Council (ICC) tournament in South Africa.
The team left Nigeria via Ethiopia Airlines on Thursday and would be on a training tour of Cape Town for 8 days before the beginning of the event on September 10.
The Cricket Federation spokesperson, Musa Ehizoje expressed optimism that the team would do well following their consistent training at the National Stadium, Abuja.
The team ought to have travelled on August 14 for the tour but could not due to lack of funds.
“This may affect the team…If they had gone for the training tour much earlier it would have been an added advantage,’’ Mr Ehizoje said.
“But nonetheless we have done the best we can in that regard and given them adequate preparations.
“We are optimistic that they will do well,’’ he added.
Nigeria will take on Namibia, Rwanda, Botswana, Tanzania, Sierra Leaone, Ghana and Zambia.
The first top teams in the tournament automatically qualify for the Under-19 World Championship in 2017.
