The long-awaited clean-up of the Ogoni land environmental degradation in the Niger Delta area of Nigeria will be taking place in a couple weeks.

This was disclosed by the country’s Minister of environment, Hajia Amina Mohammed.

Hajia Amina said her Ministry was working towards safe guarding the environment and also empowering people in that regard.

The Minister disclosed this during an interactive session with the News Papers Proprietors Association of Nigeria organised by the Federal Ministry of Information and Culture in lagos.

She said the Federal Government has set out plans to commence the clean-up of the ogoni land as promised by President Muhammadu Buhari but stated that the work would take years to be concluded because of the extent of the damage.

“It is easier to do damage but fixing such damage takes some time especially if such damages involves the environment.

It is against this back drop that we want to start a campaign of safe guarding the environment. In this respect we would have a zero tolerance for plastic cans indiscriminate thrashing as well as campaigns for waste and sanitation.

All these when enshrined would go a long way to make the people understand the need for such and how it helps the environment,” she explained.
