The 16th Nigerian Army Sports Festival, NAFEST, 2016 is set to commence at the National Stadium, Abuja from 8 to 15 October 2016.

The sporting event is part of the celebration of victory for the Nigerian Military over the Boko Haram insurgency in the North-east of the country.

The Chief of the Army staff, Lieutenant General Tukur Buratai told Newsmen that the event was informed by the strong belief that the Physical fitness of the personnel was crucial to their wellbeing.

“It’s in view of this that the NAFEST 2016 was designed to provide a forum to develop and assess the sports talents of our men, as well as provide a forum to display the sportsmanship of various formations and units of the Nigerian Army,” he said

The event was held last in 2009 largely because the Army had been involved in many operations across Nigeria.

Part of the objectives of the Games is to showcase the rich sporting talents in the Nigerian Army, improve relationship between the Military and civilians, contribute to the sports development in the country and promote espirit-de-corps among personnel.

“The conduct of the Nigerian Army games has been successful over the years. This stems from the fact that the objectives of the games which among others include the promotion of healthy living and spirit-de-corps among Nigerian Army personnel has consistently been achieved,” the army Chief added.

Trophies and medals will be presented to deserving formations for the 19 events to be featured in the games.
