Nigerian Navy games set to begin in Uyo

The 11th Nigerian Navy Games tagged “Uyo 2017” will begin in seven designated centres in Uyo on February 26.

The Secretary, Local Organising Committee (LOC) of the games, Ifiok Duff on Thursday in Uyo said that the opening and closing ceremonies of the one-week fiesta would take place at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium.

He said that the event would feature chess, scrabble, tracks and field.

Other centres where events would take place were the Ultrafit Sports complex, to host taekwondo, boxing, judo and wrestling, while squash racket, table tennis and lawn tennis would take place at Uyo Sports Club.

The Uyo township stadium would host football, the Nigerian Christian Institute (NCI) would host badminton and table tennis, while golf would take place at Le Meridien and Golf Resort.

Duff, an Assistant Director with the Akwa Ibom Ministry of Youth and Sports, said the Sports Centre at West Itam Secondary School would host handball, volleyball and basketball.

He added that a total of 17 events would be competed in the Uyo 2017 Naval Games.

He said “we’ve done everything necessary to host the festival. It’s going to be a good outing for the Navy.

“The state government will gain from this festival by discovering athletes for future national sports festivals.”

He assured the athletes that they would enjoy the friendly ambience of Uyo, and the good sporting facilities at the various centres.

The ceremonial and protocol committee of the games had already arrived and commenced cleaning of the tartan tracks and mowing the main bowl of the Uyo International Stadium.

The secretariat of the fiesta had also opened and was preparing for accreditation of athletes and officials of the games.
