Nigeria Premier League debutants, Mountain of Fire Ministries (MFM) have climbed to the top of the league table, courtesy of a 2-1 win over visiting River United on Wednesday.
The result means, the Lagos club have garnered six points from two games, following a 1-0 win over Nasarawa United at the Aper Aku Stadium in Makurdi last Sunday.
The match which was in Lagos at the Agege Stadium, saw the Lagos side open their goals account in the 18th minute when former Nigeria U-20 star Ifeanyi Ifeanyi scored from the spot after Chidi Akuneto was brought down in the box.
Sikiru Olatunbosun doubled the lead with a strike in the 24th minute.
Fredrick Obomate pulled a goal back for Rivers United in the 57th minute to take the game to 2-1.
Olatunbosun was denied another goal in the 40th minute by Sunday Rotimi, who pulled off a big a save.
Rivers United was denied an equaliser in the 72nd minute when Chigozie Ihunda hit the goal post.
In the 80th minute, MFM goalkeeper James Aiyeyemi made a double save to deny Rivers United.
Speaking after the match, Chairman of MFM, Godwin Enekhena expressed his joy for the victory, saying they were in the league to win the title.
Lobi Stars also got their second win in two games yesterday, as striker Tony Okpotu continued from where he stopped last season as he scored the first brace of the season to help the Makurdi side beat Sunshine Stars 2-1 in a Week 2 clash.
Abia Warriors also defeated El-Kanemi Warriors 2-1 to remain unbeaten after two games to pocket six points from two matches.
CHAN Eagles star Chisom Chikatara, who was widely reported to have joined Moroccan club Wydad Casablanca, gave Abia the lead.
El-Kanemi drew level through Mustapha Ibrahim, who scored off Chinedu Ohanachom’s pass.
Substitute Michael Olaha scored the winner in the 81st minute for 10-man Abia Warriors after Henry Ochuba was sent off in the 33rd minute for a second booking.
In Lokoja, David Sunday helped Giwa FC get their first point of the season after they drew 1-1 with Niger Tornadoes in Lokoja.
Niger Tornadoes went ahead through Lukman Mohammed in the 45th minute before Sunday restored parity for the Jos club in the 64th minute.
In Bauchi, Wikki Tourists and Heartland settled for a goalless draw, same result recorded last season at the same venue.
