NRFF unveils 2017 calendar of events

The Nigeria Rugby Football Federation (NFRR) has released its calendar of activities for the year, beginning with the “Super Cup’’, which is for winners of the Northern and Southern leagues on February 4 in Lagos.

The Technical Director of NRFF, Olatunji Fasimoye on Wednesday urged Nigerian foreign-based players, who wished to play for Black Stallions at the Africa Cup 1C 15s and Africa Cup 7s to note the dates.

Fasimoye said in a statement in Lagos that the international engagements would serve as qualifiers for the Commonwealth Games in March and November, 2017.

“We are looking forward to kicking off the 2017 campaign with our various programmes and tournaments. The Super Cup is always a great way to start the new season.

“With the Northern and South-West League winners battling it out in a showpiece occasion in front of a big crowd.

“Looking at the various leagues, we expect all clubs to be prepared as there are high expectations from the players judging by their performance last season,’’ the statement quoted Fasimoye as saying.

 “The African Cup 1C, which Nigeria is bidding to host is scheduled for March 17 to March 26.

“The South-West, Northern and South/South-Eastern Leagues are scheduled to begin from April to July at the Onikan Stadium, Lagos, for Northern clubs and clubs in the South respectively.

“Lilika 7s (Naija 7s series) which entails first leg of Naira 7s series for local clubs is scheduled for August in Zaria,’’ it stated.

Other events listed are the Independence 7s competition, which entails international and local teams in October in Lagos.

“The Lagos 7s (Naija 7s series) which is the second leg of the Naija series and also scheduled for October in Lagos.

“The Plateau Invitational 7’s which is the third leg of the Naija 7’s series will take place in November in Jos.

“November will also feature the African 7s Championships, which will serve as qualifiers for the Commonwealth Games 12 where all Commonwealth countries will participate.

“A coaching and referees’ course will be organised for club coaches and referees in November.

“The Sandie Beach Rugby competition which comprises local clubs and the General Assembly meeting of stakeholders will hold in December.

“It will also concentrate on grassroots developmental programme, like the `Get into Rugby’ in states like Abia, Lagos, Kaduna, Jos and Ibadan,’’ it stated.
