OAU gets new Vice Chancellor

Yinka Salaam, Osogbo

A new Vice Chancellor has been named for Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun State.

Professor Ayobami Taofeek was appointed by the governing council.

Professor Salami succeeds the outgoing Vice Chancellor, Professor Bamitale Omole.

Until his appointment, Salami was the former Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic) and also a former Director, Institute of Ecology of the institution.

The Council took the decision at its meeting on Monday evening after a long deliberation on the issues that had trailed the appointment of a new Vice Chancellor.

Court case
The non-teaching staff in the institution had opposed the selection process, a development viewed by many as an effort to stop the possible appointment of the new Vice Chancellor.

The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and the Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU) dragged the Council to court to halt the process on the allegation of deliberately ignoring the rules guiding appointment of a new Vice Chancellor.

The Council had shortlisted six candidates for the post out of whom only three, including Salami, participated in the appointment interview.
