Nigeria’s President has directed the Senate of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife to recommend a qualified person for appointment, as an acting Vice Chancellor for the university.
In a letter addressed to the Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission, President Muhammadu Buhari directed the Senate not to consider any of the candidates who earlier contested for the position.
The letter also asked the Senate to tak e immediate steps to implement the directive of the President and report to the Federal Ministry of Education.
The authorities of the OAU had last month shut down the institution over the continuous protest by non academic staff of the institution, resulting from alleged illegalities in the process of appointing a new Vice-Chancellor.
After the closure, the Government dissolved the Governing Council of the OAU and ordered that the process of appointing a new VC should be suspended pending the outcome of a court case on the matter.
Workers and students of the institution have recently celebrated the dissolution of the school’s governing council and the suspension of the selection of the Vice Chancellor by the federal government.
They applauded the federal government’s decision, declaring it as a step to redeem the integrity of the institution.
The controversy followed the crisis that trailed the exit of the immediate past Vice Chancellor, Prof Bamitale Omole and the controversial appointment of Professor Ayobami Salami as the new Vice Chancellor, by the Governing Council of the institution.
