Chief Olusegun Obasanjo backs unity among Yoruba monarchs

Obasanjo prostrates for the Ooni as a sign of respect.

Former president Olusegun Obasanjo has expressed support for the unity move by the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi.

In a dramatic move, Obasanjo who stepped in with other prominent personalities in his Yoruba regalia, prostrated for the Ooni as a sign of respect.

While some of those who were present during the visit were surprised with the prostration, others applauded and hailed the former president for his regard for traditional institution and Yoruba culture.

The former president explained that the unity move by the Ooni is important for the progress of Yorubaland.

It would be recalled that Ooni Ogunwusi had been visiting Yoruba monarchs to ensure unity.

Among those visited are the Aalafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi and Awujale of Ijeshaland, Oba Sikiru Adetona among others.

Obasanjo who was received by prominent traditional rulers in Ile-Ife urged the Ooni not to relent in his move to ensure unity, saying Ife remains the source of Yorubaland.

“I commend the role of Ooni in ensuring peace in Yorubaland. Continue what you are doing, especially your unity course.  I am happy with the move taken so far.

“It is only a sign of honour for the Ooni to visit anyone. That does not stop Ile-Ife from its position in the history of Yorubaland.”

Obasanjo subsequently prayed for the progress of Ife and Yoruba land just as he apologised for his absence at the Ooni’s coronation.

The visit became more significant as the Ooni had on Thursday visited the Owa Obokun of Ijeshaland, Oba Adekunle Aromolaran to douse the leadership tension within the Traditional Council in the State.

On his part, the Ooni expressed appreciation for the former president’s visit.

He said his mission is to unite the Yoruba race, hence, the reason for jettisoning petty leadership squabbles.

Among those present during the visitation were Dr. Femi Okunnu; Femi Majekodunmi; Chief Oyewole Faseye; Ayo Balogun and a host of others.
