It was a colourful event today, November 12, 2016, at the Samuel Ogbemudia stadium in Benin City, the Edo State capital.
Residents, supporters of the All Progressives Congress, (APC) from the State as well as those from other parts of the nation, converged at the facility to witness the inauguration of the governor and his Deputy, Philip Shuabu.
In the state box, other dignitaries like the outgoing governor, Adams Oshiomhole and his wife, the National Chairman of the APC, Chief John Oyegun, some former and serving governors, were also present at the event.
Following the laid down procedures at events of such nature, the chief judge of Edo state, administered the oath first on the deputy Mr Shuaibu, after which Obaseki was sworn in.
After the swearing-in exercise, he went ahead to perform his first function as governor by inspecting the inauguration parade in a motorcade after which he presented his inaugural address.
With the old order of Governor Adams Oshiomhole now over after 8 years of stewardship, much is expected of the new governor, as he begins his reign as the chief occupant of the Dennis Osadebe Avenue for the next four years.
On September 28, 2016, INEC had declared Mr Obaseki winner of the Edo State governorship election.
He defeated his People’s Democratic Party (PDP), counterpart, Pastor Ize Iyamu.
Obaseki is an indigene of Benin, while he attended the University of Ibadan, as well as the Colombia University in the United States.
