The Governor of Delta State in Southern Nigeria, Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa is set to flag off the Warri Peace Marathon billed for Saturday, May 28.
The Warri Peace Marathon is a 10km race and it is the first of its kind in Delta State and Okowa in a message to the participants and organisers stressed the need for healthy living through exercise and perfect dieting.
“Marathon races have become a growing part of the 21st century. The good thing about participating in sporting activities like this is that they help us stay in shape, instills discipline in us.
“It teaches us the art of time management and encourages us to eat right. Athletics also help us to cultivate the value of perseverance and give us unique opportunities to forge friendships across cultural and national boundaries,” the governor said.
Speaking on the initiative of the Warri Peace Marathon, Okowa urged the youths and communities to live in peace and harmony.
“Both in your conduct and speech consider it worthwhile to use whatever means necessary to draw attention to the ills of anti-social behaviour and the exigencies of peaceful co-existence and unity.
“It is my sincere hope that in no distant time the Warri Peace Marathon will attract international recognition and draw global attention not just to the sporting talents that abound in Nigeria but to the tourism potentials that exist in our beloved Delta State,” he said.
