Nigeria’s Dream Team has reached the medal contention stage in the football event of the ongoing Olympic games after defeating Denmark 2-0.

Team Captain Mikel Obi led by example scoring his first Olympic goal in the 16th minute of the game to put Nigeria ahead in their quarter-final encounter with Denmark.

The Danish side came fighting but two brilliant saves from Nigerian keeper Daniel Akpeyi kept Nigeria in the advantage position denying the Dens the much needed reply.

Nigeria again came close to scoring but were denied. The Dens launched a more aggressive attack seeming to dominate the match but Nigeria did not relent in its pursuit to add to the tally with more attempts at goal keeping Denmark defensive line on their toes.

Daniel Akpeyi again was at his best coming through with a third athletic save in the half when Denmark threatened the one goal advantage, bringing to an end what can best be adjudged a very entertaining first half.

Second half kicked off in similar fashion to the first half with Nigeria bringing the heat to Denmark. With 55 minutes of play, a free kick from Denmark forced Akpeyi to put up yet another good save.

The pressure from Nigeria paid off when a 58th minute corner taken by John Mikel Obi found Aminu Umar who headed the ball beating the Danish keeper flat down. Few minutes later Ezekiel put in a good header but failed to hit target.

Nigeria showed good form in the games so far for a team that had to endure many challenges getting to Brazil before the games displaying tenacity from the first game.

Nigeria, now in medal contention will face Germany who beat Portugal 4-0 to progress to the semi-final.
