PDP’s national working committee endorses Makarfi

The immediate past members of the National Working Committee (NWC) of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in Nigeria have agreed to abide by the decisions of the National Convention of the Party to recognise the Senator Ahmed Makarfi led National Caretaker Committee of the party.

In a communiqué, signed by eight members of the NWC, led by the immediate Former Deputy National Chairman of the party, Mr. Uche Secondus, in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, the members pledged their support and cooperation to the Makarfi led committee.

The immediate past National Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Mr. Olisa Metuh who is indisposed on health grounds also agreed with the position of the former NWC members.

Members of the National Working Committee added that sensitive to the mood of the generality of members of the Party that election be held into National offices of the Party to resolve lingering leadership issues in the Party, openly communicated to the Expanded National Caucus at its 32nd meeting of 6th March 2016, in Abuja, Nigeria.”

The NWC also noted that In the absence of the then National Chairman of the Party, Senator Ali Modu Sheriff, the then Deputy National Chairman of the Party, Prince Uche Secondus, presided over the Convention in accordance with Sections 33(1)(a), 35(1)(a) and 35(3)(b) of the Constitution of the Party afore stated

The National Convention “held on the 21st May 2016 at Port Harcourt by the National Executive Committee in exercise of its powers under Section 31(2)(a) of the PDP Constitution 2012 (as Amended)”

The National Convention by virtue of which they owe their respective offices resolved in accordance with democratic principles as enshrined in Section 33(9) of the Party’s Constitution afore stated, amongst others, to:

“Dissolve the National Working Committee of the Party; Set aside the zoning formula earlier adopted by the National Executive Committee with respect to the election of National Officers of the Party;

Ratify the decision of the National Executive Committee of the Party that the 2019 Presidential Candidate of the Party shall come from Northern Nigeria;

Constitute a National Caretaker Committee of 7 members under the Chairmanship of Senator Ahmed Makarfi and Secretaryship of Senator Ben Obi to run the Party for 90 days within which time they are to organize an elective National Convention of the Party;”

As products of the Party’s National Convention, the NWC said we accept without equivocation all decisions and resolutions of the National Convention of the Peoples Democratic Party held at Port Harcourt on 21st May 2016.”

The NWC further said that the decision of the National Convention to dissolve the National Working Committee merely re-echoes “our undeniable decision as members of National Working Committee to give up their tenures for congresses and Conventions to be held in May 2016”.

The National Caretaker Committee constituted by the National Convention on 21st May 2016 is fully within the powers of the National Convention under Section 33(5) (e) of the Party’s Constitution.
