Nigeria’s Acting President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo, has dispelled speculations on the health status of President Muhammadu Buhari, saying the “president is hale and hearty.”
Osinbajo, who spoke with State House Correspondents after a meeting with leaders of the All Progressives Congress, said that he had a long telephone conversation with President Buhari in the afternoon.
He said: “I spoke to him just this afternoon and we had a fairly long conversation. He was interested in knowing the budget process and how far it had gone. As you know we had a meeting today with the private sector on the Economic Recovery and Growth Plan. He was also interested in knowing what was happening with the Economic and Growth Plan and what we are doing with the private sector. And of course we informed him about some of what we are seeing, the protest match and what people are saying and the feedbacks and what people are saying about the economy.”
On the health status of the president, Osinbajo said only the president would discuss his “health status at the appropriate time” and that it is after the tests that the president is running that would determine his health status.
According to Osinbajo, President Buhari “is in good shape” and “very chatty” in the conversation he had with him.
On when the president would return to Nigeria, Professor Osinbajo said: “just as he said in the letter to the National Assembly, he needs to go through a cycle of tests and once the test results are seen and he would receive medical advice, we expect him very soon.”
Professor Osinbajo also used the opportunity to clear the air on rumours making the round that he was under pressure to resign, saying that he was “absolutely under no pressure to resign.”
He said: “In any event, I was voted by the people of this nation; myself and the president and the people of this nation have not asked us to resign.”
